Hair follicle stem cell therapy — does it really work?

성모 비율 변화 그래프. 주사 1개월 후 증가, 3개월 지속 후 감소. 대조군은 지속 하락.

We examined the latest international journal papers.

In a recently published clinical study, the areas injected with hair follicle stem cells extracted from the patient's own hair follicles showed significantly improved hair thickness and growth rate compared to the areas injected with physiological saline. The effect appeared from about 1 month, increased most at 3 months, and gradually decreased thereafter (still better than the control group even at the 9-month point). There are individual differences in how long the effect lasts.

Hello.

This is Modi Hair Plant Clinic.

The most common question from those interested in hair follicle stem cell therapy is just one.

"Does it really work?"

In this article, rather than advertisements or personal experiences,

we will examine the actual effects based on the results of a clinical study recently published in an international journal.

How was this study conducted?

Hair follicle stem cell clinical study design — a comparison method dividing one person's scalp left and right, with the patient's own hair follicle stem cells injected on one side and physiological saline on the other

This study was conducted on a total of 50 male and female hair loss patients.

To increase the reliability of the study, a Randomized Controlled Trial method was applied.

The experimental method is relatively simple.

One person's hair loss area was divided left and right, and

  • hair follicle stem cells collected from the patient's own occipital region were injected on one side
  • physiological saline on the other side

were injected, respectively.

In addition, it was conducted in a state where both the patient and the evaluator did not know which area the stem cells were injected into (Double Blind).

Afterward, changes were observed over

  • 1 month
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months

using a dermoscope.

It was conducted with all other hair loss treatments discontinued.

An illustration showing that the study was conducted with study participants having discontinued other hair loss treatments such as oral medications, topical medications, and functional shampoos

This is an important part of this study.

The participants did not undergo

  • oral hair loss medication
  • topical hair loss medication
  • functional shampoo
  • other hair loss treatments

.

In other words,

it was a study to confirm only the effect of the hair follicle stem cells themselves.

Result ① From when did the hair improve?

Hair improvement graph over time — the stem cell injection group improved from 1 month, was greatest at 3 months, and decreased thereafter (still better than the control group even at 9 months)

As a result of the study,

the areas injected with hair follicle stem cells

began to improve from 1 month.

Afterward,

  • the greatest improvement effect appeared at 3 months
  • it decreased slightly over time, but
  • a better state than the control group was maintained even up to 9 months.

On the other hand,

in the areas injected with physiological saline, hair loss continued to progress over time.

In other words,

hair follicle stem cell therapy was confirmed not only to simply maintain current hair but also to have an effect of slowing the progression of hair loss.

Result ② The proportion of thick hair increased.

Hair loss is not simply a condition where the number of hairs decreases.

The greatest characteristic is that thick hair gradually becomes thinner.

In this study,

the proportion of thick hair (terminal hair) increased significantly in the stem cell treatment group.

This is a result that shows the possibility of hair recovering to a healthier state.

Result ③ The thinner the hair, the greater the effect.

Bar graph of improvement effect by hair thickness (diameter) — greater improvement effect in thinner hair (E group experimental group vs C group control group)

The study also analyzed the effect by hair thickness.

In particular,

  • under 60㎛
  • a tendency for greater effect the thinner the hair

the improvement effect appeared even greater in hair that had already become thin.

In other words,

it means that if hair loss has not worsened to the point where the hair follicles are completely lost, there is a higher possibility of expecting a treatment effect.

Result ④ Both men and women showed similar effects.

Graph of changes in the proportion of thick hair (terminal hair) by gender — the experimental group improved in both men and women, the control group decreased

As a result of analyzing men and women separately,

there was no significant difference in the treatment effect.

In other words,

a similar improvement effect was confirmed not only in male pattern hair loss but also in female pattern hair loss.

How long does the effect last?

In this study, with just a single injection, the proportion of thick hair began to increase from 1 month after the injection, was greatest at 3 months, and gradually decreased thereafter.

However, even at the 9-month point, it was in a better state than the saline control group (in which hair loss continued to progress).

There are individual differences in how long the effect lasts.

Modi Hair Plant's hair follicle stem cell therapy

Modi Hair Plant in-clinic hair follicle stem cell research facility

Modi Hair Plant operates an in-clinic hair follicle stem cell research facilityhttps://modihairplant.com/knowhow/stem-cell-lab, and

conducts treatment by isolating stem cells from the patient's own hair follicles.

In addition,

  • autologous treatment using the patient's own hair follicles
  • direct injection down to the deep layer where the hair roots are located
  • conducting treatment while directly checking the condition of the stem cells

through processes such as these, we perform more precise treatment.

Conclusion

Hair follicle stem cell therapy is a field that still requires more long-term research.

However, in a recently published clinical study,

✔ increased hair thickness

✔ increased proportion of thick hair

✔ suppression of hair loss progression

✔ similar effects in both men and women

and other meaningful results were confirmed.

For hair loss, the earlier it is managed before the hair follicles are completely lost, the higher the possibility of treatment.

Please consult thoroughly with a specialist about whether treatment suited to your current hair loss condition is possible.
